About Cancun Records

Who’s writing this

I’m a house producer who has spent the better part of two decades making records for the floor. I started out cutting tracks in a bedroom with a borrowed 909 and a mixer that hummed; I’ve since had releases on labels I grew up buying, and I’ve stood in enough booths to know when a kick is doing its job and when it’s just loud. My thing is groove, swing and low end. If a track doesn’t move a room, I don’t care how clever the chord voicings are.

Why the site exists

I got tired of reading reviews written by people who clearly don’t dance. Too much talk about press kits and not enough about whether the bassline sits right. Cancun Records is where I write about the records, tools and habits that actually matter when you’re building tracks for a club; I test things on my own system and I say what I hear. No scores out of ten for the sake of it; no pretending every release is a masterpiece.

What you get here

Reviews of house records with an ear on the low end and the swing; guides on production, mixing and the unglamorous craft of getting a groove to breathe. I write for people who care about the pocket, not the theory. You’ll find opinions, some of them strong, and reasons behind them. If something doesn’t work on a floor, I’ll tell you.

Get in touch

If you’ve got a record you think I should hear, or a question about something I’ve written, the contact page is the place to start. I read everything that comes through there, even if I don’t always reply quickly.
